Mixing Some Old With Some New

I believe that the basic definition of literacy is just a person’s ability to read or write. To me the word literacy does not necessarily mean reading a novel or writing a research paper. It’s not so much what you read or write, just that you have the ability to. With it being the 21st century and the fact that technology is constantly expanding I think it is very important that everyone, not just students, are acquainted with the basic knowledge of how to search things beyond just text-based. I do find it a shame however that people do not read as much scholarly writing anymore. I think that it is something that is very important. Like the first article discussed, the internet is a place where your reading is choppy and not consistent. You are jumping from one web page to another, not necessarily in order, and many times there are other things distracting you like instant messages or games. So I think it is important that schools have required reading for students, that way they are getting this time that they sit down and their brain is focused on just the reading in a novel. While I think schools are doing that part right, I don’t think it is right for them to try to exclude teaching students’ frivolous methods of compositions. It is more practical for a student to be taught to read and write a variety of genres as well as a variety of different compositions because those are the areas where it will benefit from them having knowledge, especially in this day in age.

  1. I agree with you about how the internet isn't exactly the best thing for people these days, but I think that if it helps someone who doesn't like to read what to read then why not. Reading is so important today and a lot of students don't like reading. I definitely think that schools should include different genres. The main reason for this is because students need to experience different things. Also I think because even for people who really enjoy reading it can get boring if it's all the same thing.
