For my research paper I chose to interview some of my friends, convenient right? But that’s not my reason for choosing them for my interview. Because I chose to do the stereotypes in Family Guy I am dealing with racial slurs that cover a wide audience. So I thought why not just ask members of one or two of these stereotypes how they feel about the stereotype in itself and how they feel about how the show portrays that certain group. I felt these questions would cover the base of my paper to show how they feel about being portrayed in a certain way and to see if they care if that stereotype is displayed alongside a joke or as a joke (hoping for an opinion on that in the answer too).
At first I thought of asking more elderly people thinking they might have a stronger opinion on the stereotypes but how many of them are knowledgeable on the show? It would probably be hard to find one that was. I hoped that students like me would be more aware of the modern stereotypes and more aware of the show and its purpose seeing that we are generally the ones watching it.
I think it was a really good idea to interview your friends. They actually have common knowledge of the show and not just that but they are really living today. I’m not saying old people aren’t living but most of the time they don’t understand younger adults ways of thinking and acting. By interviewing people of your age group you probably could relate and use their responses to make a generalization of the public opinion. Elder would just probably flat out say the show is terrible, and rude, derogatory or whatever other negative feedback they have for it. Kids our age will probably show what is still socially unacceptable, or what has come to be socially acceptable. Now that I think about it, maybe interviewing one elder wouldn’t be to bad. You could use his or her opinion, and compare and contrast it to the youth today and see how time has changed the socially acceptable or unacceptable habits and language of society.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ali about interviewing your friends, it is a good idea for many reasons. I think it is good that you changed your mind about interviewing the elderly just because times have chaged so much and what is stereotypical now is so different then what was stereotyped for their generation. Your friends will understand who you are talking about when you reference certain characters from the show and they will also give you a more current perspective. The one interesting thing that may have come out of interviewing those from an older generation is just how much or little those specific stereotypes have changed. Also the elder have very strong stereotypes of their own when it comes to our generation therefore their answers may be slightly biased. I think stereotypes have definitely changed over time and your friends may be more up to date with such changes, especially when it comes to media, because they are more involved in that sort of entertainment than elder people.
