Transgender Community

The community that I think I might write this paper about is the community of transgender or transvestite people. I have always had mix emotions about this community. I wouldn’t say that I am necessarily scared of transgender people but more intrigued. I didn’t really understand what transgender people were until I watched the most recent season of MTV’s the Real World in which a transgender person (Kaitlin) is one of the cast members. She at first is not open about the fact that she is transgender but once she opens up she is very open to sharing her experience. The emotional and physical pain that she had to go through just to be the way that she wanted was very interesting to hear about. I am unsure if I want to combine the two communities or just focus on transgender. Transgender people are people that were born a certain sex yet undergo a surgical procedure to “transform” into their desired sex. It is an expensive and extensive surgical procedure and is not performed in the United States. Those that want to get the surgery done have to go through months of therapy and take a ton of hormonal pills way before they can even have the surgery performed. The physical and emotional change that the transgender people undergo through their metamorphism is something that I find could lead to a very interesting paper. I feel that that the gay community is such a hot topic in today’s society and there are so many different opinions out there that it will be interesting to research.
