When I was in 7th grade I attended Palmetto Middle School in Miami, Florida. I found out around my birthday that we would soon be moving to a new county. While enrolled at Palmetto I was part of the dance school program, and was required to choreograph a group dance to be performed at the year showcase at the end of the school year. This was going to be my last dance performance with my three best friends of a while. We decided to dance to the “Like Mike” movie song “Basketball” by Lil Bow Wow. We spent several months creating and perfecting the biggest and most significant dance of my dance career. I knew once I moved, I would never have the same passion for dance because I had grown up and always danced with these girls. The big night came and we danced our hearts out, for a bunch of seventh graders I would have to say we did a great job, and the audience loved it. I was completely torn once the performance was over, it felt like nothing would ever be the same. Every time the song comes on, I go back to that night and those last few months at Palmetto. It didn’t just hold the memory of that showcase, or that dance, it was a theme song for our friendship. Now almost 6 years later, those girls and I still do speak on occasion, but that song no matter how far apart holds our friendship together and gives us something to go back to and smile about when we miss each other. Despite how lame it may seem now “Basketball” will always make us laugh, cement our friendship and remind us how important a school requirement can become for us.
