NY Times
I am not really the best person to ask about what is going on in the world today. I feel like everything is so controversial and I cannot stand controversy so I pretty much avoid watching the news. I watch local news just so that I dont sound like I live under a rock but I usually try to stay from all of the drama of the news. One thing however, that has me pretty nervous is the job market. When I get out of college I want to be able to enter the work force fairly soon but with the amount of unemployed people these days I am afraid that it wont be much better when it comes times for me to start the job search. The article I read was featured in the New York Times and was written by Louis Uchitelle. The article was titled "Jobless Rate hits 7.2%, a 16-Year High". The article begins to discuss the change in the percentage of unemployment and indicates that there are now over 11 million Americans without jobs. My sister's boyfriend used to work for Lehman Brothers in New York City but was recently let go. They are now saving everything they make just to pay their rent. Luckily my sister has a job that pays very well but they still didnt have enough money to come home this year for Christmas. This was the first year we have had Christmas without her and it was just really weird not having Chrissy (my sister) or Jason (her bf) here celebrating with us. My other sister worked in Orlando at the Westgate Resort and was laid off only 5 months after being employed. Luckily my parents are self employed and will continue to have work. However, we are still making cutbacks as is everyone I am sure. The article also explains that our President-elect, Obama, realizes the amount of suffering and fear this instills in everyone and has numerous ideas of how to handle this massive economy downfall and plans to deal with it immediately.

I agree. It's hard for me as well to watch the news, especially in the morning when I'm getting ready to go to school or to teach. I can't handle all that negativism first thing in the morning.
